BURNING MAN: THE ULTIMATE EXPERIENCE THAT BLEW MY MIND

It’s one of those things that you have to experience to fully understand.

As for me, why did I go? Honestly, I went for the art. The art, and the costumes! I’m not gonna lie- I LOVE dressing up! Give me a black tie gala, a theme party, or Halloween, and I’m a happy camper! And to me, art and fashion are one and the same- it’s all about creativity and self-expression- two things I hold close to my heart. Also, the other thing is, I like to have my mind blown. I don’t want to just insipidly go through life feeling unenthused.  And that comes from seeing things or experiencing things that you wouldn’t normally see or do. I love the rush of experiencing something completely unexpected and amazing. Being a photographer, I am very moved by images– Moments and times that are captured, and then shared, and able to evoke emotion. Actually, when I had seen some images of past years of Burning Man, I just knew, without a doubt, that it was something I had to feel and experience for myself. And this was finally my year, where all the stars aligned….

So, what IS Burning Man exactly?

When people say there is no way to explain it, and you won’t understand until you go, I now fully know what they mean. It was so much more than I could have ever imagined. But to appreciate it, you have to be willing to let yourself be entirely open to it all. If you do, then Burning Man will illuminate your mind, warm your heart, and set fire to your soul.

If I had to try to explain Burning Man in one sentence, I would say that it is the ultimate place where absolute creative self-expression is met with zero judgement. It’s not a festival or a carnival. It’s a pop-up City— for one week only— built and created and financed entirely by all those who choose to attend. It’s a temporary society, where an unparalleled collaboration of diverse people from around the globe, come together to connect with one another and with their innermost selves. You need a ticket to enter (and they are very coveted and not easy to come by). The normal price for a ticket is $425, and this covers the set up of center camp, with medics and rangers there to assist you at all times, portable bathrooms, etc. But once inside…. no money is required.

Just like any other city, you can find food, bars, medical facilities, performances, etc. But where else in the world can you partake in a yoga class, play trampoline dodgeball, hear a Ted Talk, get a healing reiki treatment, receive a kinky lesson in the art of spanking, network business, attend a performance of the Philharmonic Orchestra in front of a larger than life art installation, and dance at any given minute at a pumping club, all within the same hour and within a one minute bike ride? And all at no cost?

This magical place is created at the expense of each individual ‘Burner’ for the purpose of filling other humans with awe and inspiration, and creating a beautiful community connection.

It’s a virtual ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ for educated, conscientious, curious, creative, and open minds who are wanting to experience absolute freedom in a safe and non-judge mental arena, where you can just surrender and truly let go. — Let go of worries, of restrictions, of things weighing you down. You can let go of the persona you are expected to be in daily life, and be who you want to be. You can let go of your inhibitions, and revel in the beauty of just breathing and pulsing and smiling. I tell you, it is hard not to smile there. I loved the open Playa, alongside the tightly woven neighborhoods of the camps. I loved the people I met. I even loved the dust. Because it was entirely real. Here, you can let your hair down, let your clothes slip off, or costume yourself up to new levels. You can calm your mind & body, relax, and feel peace in a true escape from any and all confines of daily life. Or you can choose to revel and party and celebrate…. Be your favorite spirit animal!! Mine is a sparkly, jewel-encrusted Unicorn, and she was ecstatic to prance around the Playa on her rainbow bicycle, taking pictures of the most insanely amazing art and creation she’s ever seen. Happiness overload.

The elements of the Playa- extreme heat & extreme cold, dust storms, etc, can be a struggle for some, if you’re not prepared. But for every obstacle, there are at least 1000 sweet souls, willing to lend a hand, help you out, and offer salvation. This gifting community takes care of one another in ways that we can only wish for the rest of the world. It is true what they say… the Playa provides.

And when this World realizes what Burning Man revelers already understand….. that when the power of love replaces the love for power, only then, can we all live happily together on this planet.

Until next time….. Aloha, Burning Man! (I WILL be back!)

DAPHNE’S TOP 10 PACKING LIST ‘MUSTS’ FOR BURNING MAN:

  1. FACE/DUST MASK –  I had several, and used them all. One multifunctional face mask for less intense dust storms and also for biking in the colder night air. And one more heavy duty mask for more intense dust storms. And an in-between, that is also a stylish mask.
  2. GOGGLES – My favorite pair were BMX biking goggles that prevent against dust too. I bedazzled them with rhinestones, and they worked awesomely! But you can have more than one pair, if you want some that are more fun.
  3. FAIRY LIGHTS/LED lights – The Playa is super dark at night. If you are planning to walk or bike anywhere, you need to light yourself and your bike up. It’s dangerous if you are not lit. Fairy light strands can be woven around your body or your bike, and wheel lights and a front flashlight are good for your bicycle.
  4. BIKE SEAT COVER – If you are biking around the Playa for hours on end, a super cushiony bike seat cover will save your ass.
  5. BIKE LOCK – People on the Playa won’t try to steal your bike on purpose, but sometimes when it is dark (and people are drunk), they may grab a bike accidentally that isn’t theirs (yours!). You do NOT want to walk home from the Playa during the cold, dark night, if you can help it! Get a combo bike lock, and lock your wheel to the body, or lock two bikes together.
  6. HEAVY COAT – It gets very cold at night (and you will definitely want to venture out at night!) Make sure you have a warm coat, and a fun faux fur coat if you want to be stylish while keeping warm.
  7. TIN CUP – easy to wash, easy to clip, this carabiner cup can attach to your bag/bike basket, and is handy to bring around with you everywhere, to be filled with drinks (alcohol, coffee, etc, that people at various camps are handing out).
  8. WATER BOTTLE – stay hydrated at all times! Fill your water bottle before heading out for the playa. I used this silicon water bottle, because it is light & collapses so that it doesn’t take up much room when you are done with the water.
  9. CAMERA WITH HOUSING – If you plan to take any photos, get a protective casing for your iPhone, or a Go-Pro with waterproof housing, to protect your devices from the dust. Many cameras have been destroyed by the dust.
  10. ELECTROLYTES/VITAMIN PACKS – with all the elements of the playa, and drastic temperature changes, plus the fact that you may be pushing your body to the limits on very little sleep, these will help!

In revisiting photos from countries past, I can’t In revisiting photos from countries past, I can’t leave out the good ol’ US of A. But I’ve seen way too much of this country to be able to put it into one post. But these photos are from my all-time favorite road trip in the US— the Southwest & national parks. It was the first trip we took after Covid, and we thought it would be best to drive by ourselves and hike through these amazing landscapes alone. We hit Joshua Tree National Park in CA, the Valley of Fire in NV, Zion, Kanara Falls, Bryce Canyon, & Escalante in UT, and ended our trip in Sedona, AZ. and there were so many smaller gems in between, including Kanab, Utah, which was our homebase for most of this trip. This was very hard to whittle down to 20 photos, but these are some of my favorites from this epic USA road trip. >>>>>>

An African Safari had been my no. 1 Bucketlist ite An African Safari had been my no. 1 Bucketlist item for a very long time. And Tanzania delivered in droves!!! (All thanks to my superstar planner & guide at @zohar_african_safaris ). It could not have been a more amazing trip in any way. We saw the Big 5 (all in one day), soared over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon, witnessed the crazy beautiful chaos of the great migration River crossing, and saw the most unbelievably bright red sunrises. We came within 2 feet of lion prides, ate dinner alongside elephants at a watering hole, and had to stop our vehicle multiple times for giraffe crossings. Truly a photographer’s heaven, and the trip of a lifetime…. >>>>

Spain! It’s the birthplace of Spanish guitar, Gaud Spain! It’s the birthplace of Spanish guitar, Gaudi, flamenco, and all importantly, …. Paella! We visited cities along the southern coast— Cadiz, Rhonda, Valencia, and the stunning Barcelona. Barcelona is the one city in Spain that I have visited twice. Once with my parents and their friends about 10 years ago, which was the trip that made me want to go back. During both trips, I visited La Sagrada Familia (Gaudi’s cathedral masterpiece), and both times, I actually wept with overwhelming emotions over the artistry and imagination and creation that exists in humankind. It was honestly that profound. And also, it makes me so sad that we are losing current and future generations to artificial intelligence, when there is so much potential still for immense beauty with each individual’s creative mind, if only it remained the singular tool for art and imagination. >>>>

Morocco was another of my favorite travel experien Morocco was another of my favorite travel experiences. The country is so vastly different from town to town— fortresses along windswept beaches, crazy rock canyons, vibrant colors and narrow streets of the old Medina markets, and the shifting shapes and hues of the amazing Sahara sand dunes. And getting to share all of this with fun friends in a two week road trip, made Morocco one of the most awesome adventures! We also hiked through slot canyons, rode quad bikes and camels, and danced around a bonfire in the middle of the desert, and through a magical garden of pillowed tents and fairy lights. >>>>>>

The Azores are not technically their own country. The Azores are not technically their own country. They belong to Portugal. But this group of nine volcanic Islands, far off the European coast in the Atlantic, is an autonomous, self-governing region, so I’m highlighting it here. Also, because as much as I traveled, I had not heard of the Azores much, prior to actually visiting.
The islands are absolutely gorgeous though, with rolling green hills, bright aqua lakes, volcano calderas, and lots of Portuguese style tile and architecture throughout the old towns. >>>>

Italy is the country that I have been to the most. Italy is the country that I have been to the most. Over a dozen times throughout my life. And it’s probably my very favorite. It’s where my father was born, and where most of my relatives still live, and it is so historically, architecturally, and culturally rich. And while I have seen Tuscany, and Puglia, Rome, Venice, and Florence, my heart will always be in the Amalfi coast, which is the area that my family is from, and where we always vacationed with them while in Italy. And even though I have visited so many stunning regions and towns throughout the country, there is so much more of it that I still have left to explore! And I plan to do it, one gnocchi at a time! >>>>>

Choosing to go to the Philippines was the easiest Choosing to go to the Philippines was the easiest decision. Deciding which of the 7000+ islands to visit, was the hard part. We narrowed it down to Cebu, Coron Island, and Siargao. And I think it was the most perfect combination of adrenaline adventure and very chill vibes. Not to mention the clearest water, and most interesting and photographic rock formations! Some of the locations took a while to get to, and because many of the areas that we wanted to visit were quite remote, it is not the easiest place to navigate. But the people are amazingly friendly and helpful, and if you are looking to have your hair blown back by natural beauty, the Philippines is definitely a place to visit. My drone certainly never had more fun either! >>>>>>

Austria holds a very special place in my heart, be Austria holds a very special place in my heart, because it is where my Mother was from, and where almost all of her family still lives. I have been there about a dozen times over the course of my life, but no trip was more special than the most recent one. I got to honor her by going to the very regal and very magnificent Viennese opera ball, which was a life-long dream of hers. Some of these photos were taken then, and others were taken four years ago when we visited Salzburg and Hallstatt, and many of the magical Christmas markets all around Austria. And several photos were from the last time I was in Austria with my mother— for one of our big family reunions, eight years ago. It’s the one place I feel is most like a fairy-tale come to life…. >>>

I definitely want to go back to see more of Portug I definitely want to go back to see more of Portugal. We were only there, passing through, but it left an impression. The haunting Castles in Sintra, and the lively streets of Lisbon gave us just a taste of this beautiful country. But the most memorable taste was that of pastel de nata, one of my now absolute favorite deserts in the world. We had it baked fresh from the most famous pastel bakery, courtesy of our driver, Ruben, who knew everyone, everywhere. Portugal, we’ll be back! >>>

Thailand had, without a doubt, the best sunset I’v Thailand had, without a doubt, the best sunset I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’ve seen 50 years worth of them. I know this photo looks overly edited, but it’s not. It was this crazy colorful. This first photo was in Krabi, in 2016. And there was clearly some sorcery in the sky that night! I’ve since been back to Thailand two years ago, and have been lucky enough to visit Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Krabi, the islands of Phuket, and Koh Samui. Each place has its own vibe and flavor, and so, SO much beauty. Not to mention the kindness of the Thai people, and the deliciousness of all that amazing food. Thailand is a country that makes you feel connected to nature, and to yourself, in the most calming and wonderful way. It’s definitely a place where I could see myself spending long stretches of time… >>>>>

Norway is an arctic wonderland. And the only quest Norway is an arctic wonderland. And the only question is whether to go in the warm weather, or in the winter time. We opted to go in early March, because it’s always been on my bucket list to see the northern lights, and being in the Arctic Circle in the winter gives you a great opportunity for that. We started our trip in the far north, in Tromsø, which are the last four photos, and ended in the amazing Lofoten islands. And we were lucky enough to see the northern lights in both places. It really was a spectacular adventure, and the red and yellow Rorbuer (fishing huts) that dotted the amazing landscapes, blanketed in snow, were exceptionally magical!! >>>>>>>
